Profile: Tahmima Anam
A Golden Age, a novel by Tahmima Anam, is set against the backdrop of the Bangladesh Liberation War (Mukti Judhho) of 1971.
Tahmima stayed in Bangladesh between 2000 and 2002 to collate research material for her PhD from Harvard University, upon which she drew for the novel. She comes from an illustrious family in Bangladesh; her father is Mahfuz Anam, editor and a prominent figure in Bangladehi civil society and her grandfather Abul Mansur Ahmed was a renowned satirist and politician.
The novel tells the story of the War of Independence through the eyes of the central character Rehana Haque and her family. Rehana’s story begins in 1956 when she loses custody of her children after her husband’s death. Along with her struggle to win them back, and then her attempts to protect them as they get involved with the war.
I got a chance to put to her a few questions about her work and the novel:
Is there a particular novelist whom you admire and influenced you in writing A Golden Age?
Tahmima: When imaginging the novel, I turned to other writers whose writing had a strong sense of place. I like the novelists of the American south, because they write very evocatively about the landscape of the south–which, remarkably, resembles the landscape of Bangladesh. So I get a lot of inspiration from those writers, such as William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor. I also read a lot of novels set in and around wartime, such as Pat Barker’s Regeneration Trilogy, Chimamanda Ngoze Adichie’s Half of a Yellow Sun, and Irene Nemirovsky’s Suite Francaise.
A Golden Age is a hugely important book, if only for the vast Bangladeshi diaspora who have yet to see the events of 1971 set forth in a novel in English. Did you realise that younger Bangladeshis have been waiting for a book such as this, and was it your intention to write for them?
Tahmima: Yes, I certainly did think of the younger generation of Bangladeshis when I was writing the book. There’s been a lot of literature written about the war in Bangla, but without translation some of these stories and novels cannot reach a wider audience. So I was thinking of this wider audience–both the younger generation of Bangladeshis and also a wider western audience who are unfamiliar with the war.
With the different kinds of political appropriation of the war back home, I felt it was important to write a story about the lives of ordinary people during ‘71–how they survived, how their relationships with one another were transformed by this event. I think it’s important to tell the story from that point of view, so that the younger generation of Bangladeshis don’t just relate to the story of ‘71 as a political issue, but rather a part of our history that we can all lay claim to.
Monica Ali has admitted that research was not “hugely important” for her in Brick Lane. On the other hand, A Golden Age is steeped in the minutia of the events of 1971, and your attention to detail is notable. How important was research in the writing of this novel?
Tahmima: The research aspect was crucial for me in writing this novel. I really believe in the importance of doing one’s research–even when evoking a fictional world.
As this was a historical novel this was especially important. I went to Bangladesh for two years in 2000-2002, where I interviewed many ex-freedom fighters, guerilla fighters, and student activists from ‘71. I asked them all kinds of questions, right down to the details of what they wore and what kind of music they listened to in ‘71. I also read lots of memoirs published by ‘71 veterans, which gave me an insight into the times. When I’d finished my novel, I gave it to several people to read to make sure that the details were correct. So even though I will always maintain that this is a work of fiction, I tried very hard to retain the historical accuracy.
Are you expecting any political fall-out as a result of the novel’s look into the contentious interpretations of the political history of Bangladesh?
Tahmima: I do think it’s unfortunate that our liberation war has been used as a means of gaining political legitimacy. So it’s possible that a novel about the war will become controversial. But if that is the case, at least it will start a dialogue about what aspects of our history we want to turn over to the politicians, and how we might re-claim that history for ourselves. Perhaps a debate will encourage others to write competing narratives.
Why did you choose to write about 1971? Was it the story or the characters that came to you or did you choose to write about the period and then shape the story around it?
Tahmima: I’ve always had a fascination with ‘71 and I’ve always wanted to write a book set in that period. However, the story did not take shape until I found the main character, Rehana. When I decided to tell the story through her eyes, the structure of the novel fell into place.
What is your next writing project?
Tahmima: The next novel is set in Calcutta in the 1920’s. It’s a novel about the Bengali muslim aristocracy in the waning years of the British Empire.
A Golden Age is published on 8 March. As part of the launch day, Tahmima will be reading at the literary festival held in the East End, Spit-Lit, on March 8 at 7pm. More details here.
Tahmima also has her own website at www.tahmima.com
She recently did an interview for the Sunday Telegraph.

Sid/Tahmima : I’m really looking forward to buying and reading a copy for myself, so please do not take my comments as criticism of the book.
a) As a slightly older reader, I know that some parts of the vast Bangladeshi diaspora have already seen “the events of 1971 set forth in a novel in English” — the 1971 chapter is one of the more lucid and memorable parts of Midnight’s Children.
It is highly significant that Salman Rushdie - who at the time he published - went out of his way to personally criticise Indira Gandhi and Zulfi Bhutto (who both had their fans in Brit liberal circles in the seventies) - wrote wholly sympathetically of Bangladesh and the 1971 Liberation war.
b) While not caring much for Brick Lane as a novel, I do hope the reference to Monica Ali not having done research is not some form of coded reference like ‘lack of authenticity’ (to her mixed heritage)
A little research on the Guardian search engine throws up an interesting autobiographical article
recalling Monica Ali’s earliest memories - of her leaving Bangladesh in 1971 where her father taught at Dhaka University : see Where I’m coming from
“As a child she hid from the Pakistani army, then fled to Britain with her English mother. But is Monica Ali’s colourful life story the basis for her acclaimed first novel? Well, sort of…

Nobody should go overboard with either praise or criticism as this work touches on sensitive political issues regarding the Bangladeshi Liberation War. Praise or criticism should be based on literary merit.
From my initial googling I observe that she is the daughter and granddaughter of a family heavily steeped in Awami League politics. Her father is the editor of a controversial Bangladeshi newspaper disliked by rightwing and Islamic political parties. The articles in the Daily Star (run by her father) and New Age are to be expected given her family background. It is mostly fringe left/secular UK diaspora groups promoting her. They have limited coverage. One wonders if some of the Western media access (Observer) is also based on this rather than the contents of her book. It’s a case of WHO you know rather than what you know.
In addition, she herself has not lived in Bangladesh since childhood. Her article in the Statesman drew as much criticism as praise, in line with political fissures in Bangladesh. All these factors may or may not have a bearing on the novels reception.
I wish somebody unconnected to the political establishment in Bangladesh had written about a seminal (and contested) event like the Liberation War.

Nobody should go overboard with either praise or criticism as this work touches on sensitive political issues regarding the Bangladeshi Liberation War. Praise or criticism should be based on literary merit.
And then you proceed to knock her credentials based on her family background and speculation of her politics. hahaha
Your tirade underlines the scarcity-mentality and the shabby partisan political criticism that this novel will inevitably receive. And all that without reading the book! No doubt, there will be more, all lining up, waiting to be offended.
The novel will stand on its own literary merit, of that there is no doubt.
March 6th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
I think Anam is counting on the publicity generated by the ‘Secularism v Islam’ slant on the Independence struggle in order to win over some middle class white people and the chattering classes in Bangladesh. Adopting a similar strategy to Monica Ali whose second (and less controversial) book sank without trace when measured on a literary basis only. She’s making the Independence War history more controversial because she has a political agenda connected to a prominent family benefiting from Bangladeshi party politics.
Even so, she’s still a Bangladeshi novelist who managed to publish her work (even with some help from her dad) and we should support her.
March 6th, 2007 at 2:43 pm
She’s making the Independence War history more controversial because she has a political agenda connected to a prominent family benefiting from Bangladeshi party politics.
Again, without reading the book, you’re not really qualified to say, are you? She isn’t making the Independence War history more controversial at all. There’s nothing controversial about the book but it will attract controversy simply because of the nature of the politicisation of the Independence history. And the bit about ‘prominent family benefiting from Bangladeshi party politics’ is bollocks really. But again, Bangladeshis who will be keenest to judge her efforts will be those who will not have read the book.
March 6th, 2007 at 3:41 pm
‘And the bit about ‘prominent family benefiting from Bangladeshi party politics’ is bollocks really’.
She is daughter of the editor and that’s why the Daily Star devoted a full page interview with her and so did Nu Age (haven’t seen it tho). No controversy in that statement. Nepotism is rife in Bangladesh.
Her father is editor of a paper perceived to be aligned to the Awami League. In Bangladesh editors regularly receive large sums of money for such support. Maybe one day he will also be a Awami League Minister when they form the government at the next elections.
In the DS article, it didn’t even include a disclaimer about her being the editors daughter. Talk about media professionalism in Bangladesh!
ps. Isn’t it about time someone called me a Razakar? lol
March 6th, 2007 at 4:09 pm
Mahfuz Anam is the editor of two of the foremost English language dailies in Bangladesh. Tahmima has written what is probably the first novel on the Independence War in English.
I don’t know about you, but to me that sounds like material DS and NA are going to feature irrespective of whether Tahmima is Mahfuz’s daughter or not.
And if nepotism is your gripe du jour - how come you’re not making a song and dance about your man Tarek Zia and his mother, the BNP ex-PM?
At least Tahmima Anam can string a sentence together.
March 10th, 2007 at 5:54 pm
Sounds interesting - thanks for highlighting this Sid.

The book was reviewed on Newsnight Review last night. Jonathan Freedland seemed to like it, bless him.
March 12th, 2007 at 4:53 pm
oh phooey - it’s always hard getting a book contract - and yes she has managed it where lots of people havent - but so what! I think that’s probably more to do with Creative Writing Masters than say who her Dad is - i don’t think that really would have made much impact with a bunch of international book publishers. once you’ve got the contract, okay then it helps for people to be like oh ok you come from an ‘intellectual’ background which helps ‘profiling’ etc. but..
Looking back at the young published authors, a lot of them were helped greatly in getting their manuscripts through the door because of the creative writing courses and contacts they have. so if you’ve got a novel in you, seems it would be a good idea to sign up for one!
March 15th, 2007 at 11:57 pm
Its an interesting time and place to be releasing such a book. Some literary reviews, from cultural theorists rather than NNLR, would be good to read. Not sure if i would devote the time or money to read it though. creative writing + history = a nightmare.
The family background issues are there for anyone to interpret as best as they can. Best not be nasty about it. There are dozens of possible narratives that can be written about experiences and feelings in those times, nobody is preventing other voices from publishing (though id expect they might get less shadda attention).
Her next project seems a lot more interesting to me, a less popular topic where theres much to learn and connect with. I wonder how she will end up presenting it.
March 16th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
shadda attention? well i suppose ‘postcolonial’ writing in general tends to get a lot of “shadda attention” - im sure a lot of ordinary young writers in this country might find that quite annoying - all these people in other countries getting more interest from the establishment
March 17th, 2007 at 12:53 pm
depends who’s attention you are trying to impact and advance right?

Well I read the first few pages and wasn’t put off by description of a woman giving birth in a sqaut position which is what made by tummy turn when i picked up Monical Ali, so this is a great start. Go Tahmina, show us how we Bangladeshis don’t go and criticise every book about us - just the crap ones that get shaddy attention.
I am going to wait for the soft copy, though. Looking forward to it.
I dunno - reading between the lines, young writers these days are packages - and she is the same package as a lot of writers - middle to upper class, can afford to take time out of a day job (with the help of a grant) to write. So the Bengali thing is neither here nor there. If you bloggers out there didn’t have to earn a living somehow, and I believe there is a reasonable number of you who can string a sentence, I reckon you’d be successul with a book… Maybe I am being naive. But anywy, we’ll never know as presumaly you all have to work. But I take my hat off to her - it aint easy writing about that episode in bangladesh’s history and she writes about it as someone who cares - which makes it more than just a book for shada attention. That’s the main difference between her and I won’t say who.
