Saddam Snuffed
Woke up this morning to the news, flooding the news channels, that Saddam Hussein has been hanged in Iraq. There’s even an accompanying snuff movie of the execution (linked off the BBC page above) for all you who get off on a bit of gallows pornography.
So that’s Augusto Pinochet and Saddam Hussein down in the same month.
Who do you think deserves to feel the rope next?
Top of the list is, of course, sexy Henry Kissinger, who deserves an ICC hearing at the very least.

… and so little mention in all this (save for a brief allusion on Channel 4) on the role we played in building up Saddam. Come to think of it, very little either on the way we built up Pinochet. I agree that Kissinger needs to go next, surely the most undeserving Nobel Laureate ever. Would there be room for Bush and Blair who have made of Iraq a far worse place than Saddam ever managed to?

Andrew - you’re right. Fuck-all on how the USA plied him with weaponry to use in the killing of 1 million Iranians. He was tried on charges for a lesser crime that the West were not complicit in (the Dujail atrocities) but not on the crimes that the West had a direct hand in. For example, Bush Snr encouraged the Kurds and the Marsh Arabs to rise up against Saddam, but left them without any support, which allowed him to go in and slaughter them.
As for this execution, the timing, the feeling that he was rushed to the gallows in spite of facing a raft of other charges means that any chance of Saddam singing like a canary and implicating Western agencies that were complicit in his crimes have gone to the grave with him.
Tariq Ali calls it a colonial hanging.
That Saddam was a tyrant is beyond dispute, but what is conveniently forgotten is that most of his crimes were committed when he was a staunch ally of those who now occupy the country. It was, as he admitted in one of his trial outbursts, the approval of Washington (and the poison gas supplied by West Germany) that gave him the confidence to douse Halabja with chemicals in the midst of the Iran-Iraq war. He deserved a proper trial and punishment in an independent Iraq. Not this.
The double standards applied by the west never cease to astonish. Indonesia’s Suharto who presided over a mountain of corpses (at least 1 million, to accept the lowest figure) was protected by Washington. He never annoyed them as much as Saddam.
And what of those who have created the mess in Iraq today? The torturers of Abu Ghraib; the pitiless butchers of Fallujah; the ethnic cleansers of Baghdad, the Kurdish prison boss who boasts that his model is Guantánamo. Will Bush and Blair ever be tried for war crimes? Doubtful. And Aznar, currently employed as a lecturer at Georgetown University in Washington, DC , where the language of instruction is English of which he doesn’t speak a word. His reward is a punishment for the students.
Saddam’s lynching might send a shiver through the collective, if artificial, spine of the Arab ruling elites. If Saddam can be hanged, so can Mubarak, the Hashemite joker in Amman and the Saudi royals - as long as those who topple them are happy to play ball with Washington.

So this disgusting show trial and barbaric execution is what democracy in post-Saddam Iraq is all about? This is what regime-change, at the expense of 600,000 Iraqis and hundreds of coalitions soldiers has been about?
If Saddam is guilty, then when will we see Blair, Bush, Bashir, Mugabe and yes, Henry Kissinger go on trial?

Lars, true enough. But why did Bush Snr promise them this support in the first place? Only to pull out at the last minute to protect his own and thereby hand them over to Saddam to slaughter. I suspect you’ll tell me it was realpolitik. But you’ll accept that that’s just a euphemism for treachery, pure and simple.

Whether or not “treachery” is applicable depends on what precise statements Bush Snr made in 1991. I must admit I haven’t been able to find that out.

You see, Saddam is dead and half the world are saying that Bush and Blair deserve to be dispatched in the much same way.
The rationale behind this seems to be that previous governments of their respective countries (ie., the US and UK) were instrumental in putting Saddam into power and subsequently provided him with finances, intelligence, arms, and the political leeway to kill many Shias, Kurds and Iranians when it in was in their politico-economical interests to do so. Therefore, they are equally accountable. No one seems to be denying this. But let’s be be clear: not a hair on the heads of Blair or bush will ever be touched as a result of Iraq, so why bother going on about it?
What should perhaps be stressed more often is that the whole Iraq debacle - the site Saddam on the gallows and the lack of any accountability on the part of the US/UK, despite the few sham ‘enquiries
‘ - should remain a salutory lesson for any other prospective muslims (leaders or otherwise) who choose to side with westen oil-consuming countries in the hope of turning against their fellow muslims.

Seriously, if this guy or anyone else has any credible evidence, that the Reagan administration supplied chemical weapons to Iraq, do everyone a favour and send to the N.Y.T. because they will run it on the cover, and it will most likely force Bush to resign.

No, but a counterexample can disprove a generalization. And you’re the one making the generalization: “no one seems to be denying this”. I deny it - so your sentence as stated is false, since at least one person (me) is denying it.
But that is beside the point. What I’m questioning is your premise, that the governments were instrumental in putting Saddam to power. Do you have any evidence that, say, the UK has had, what can reasonably be described as an instrumental role in putting Saddam to power and his subsequent genocides?

Lars, the statement that “no one is denying this” but quite obviously a simple subject-verb-object statement and not a generalisation about observed phenomenon. Rather, your post was quite clearly a generalisation because it begain with the words “In general”.

And look, with regard to your question for evidence, do you think that the western diplomats who aided Saddam all the way upto his rather unwise foray into oil-rich Quwait will leave such evidence lying around?
Do you think that the understanding that Western diplomacy is just a thin veneer over lies and corruption will be a *popular* one which you will readily find in daily newspapers and consumer TV news shows? Do you think that western diplomats are not capable of manipulating evidence (”weapons of mass destruction?”)
Do you think that it is easy to undo your brainwashing and to see the truth for what it is?
