Event: Drishtipat London
I’ve been quite busy helping out with the Drishtipat London launch. Also covered on AIM here.
The event is highlighting the Bangladesh Garments industry, which has flared up recently because of the recent riots (May 2006).
I was surprised to find out that there have been some 4,000 factory workers deaths, due to the lack of provision of basic safety protocols. Also discovered that there unionisation has been stamped out and workers have not been able to join trade unions. The history of the industry in Bangladesh reads like a page from pre-Industrial revolution Europe.

post-industrial revolution Europe doesn’t have a great track record for encouraging unionism either, these days.

It went superbly well. I’ll be posting a note on the lessons learnt soon. But the launch raised a lot of awareness, put across some difficult facts without being mawkish, and galvanised a lot of positive reaction.

If there’s anything this world can use right now, a union is it. The more the merrier. Especially in Bangladesh, sounds like.
